In the time of second world war this institute had been a army camp. By 1948 It had been converted into a teachers' training college . It was one of the five National Colleges of Education started in 1985.

Veyangoda Training College = Hapitigama National College Of Education

Uyanwaththa Traing College = Mahaweli Nationnal College Of Education

Kaluthara Training College = Pasdunrata National College Of Education

Bidunuwewa Training College = Uva National College Of Education

At the begining ,only Primary course was conducted at Mahaweli National College Of Education . There were about 250 trainees in the first batch.

In the year 2000 the English course was introduced to Mahaweli NCOE.

In the year 2003 - Library Science and Information Technology Course

was Introduced to this College.In 2003 onwards the primary course is not conducted in Mahaweli NCOE

In 2000, the Main Hall, Office Complex, Westurn Music Building, Computer Laborotory, Pavilion were constructed under TETD Computer Project. Hostels were renovated under this project as well.
